Black Stilting

Susan and the Angels

All kindsa poetry fans...

The official launch of Planet Earth Poetry last night brought forth a monster medley of poetry lovers -- all shapes, sizes and ages -- and some fine musical accompanyment by Flat Lightning (half of which is Rick Van Krugel of Mandolirium). Susan Stenson was on hand selling AIDS Angels to raise money for medical relief to Africa, in lieu of admission charges. And then there were the readings - 20? 30? of them? An alarming number anyway. I thought I might fall in a swoon under the coffee table by the end, but things moved along at a good clip, made merciful by the evening's rules: one poem only, by someone else. Our new hero, Dave Crothal, the owner of the Black Stilt, even read a poem.

Wendy Morton closed the evening with one of my favourite all time poems, Forgetfulness - click that link to find a fabulous animated version by the author, Billy Collins (I understand this is also available as an iPod download - now there's technology I can get behind!)

Hi Rhona, Thank you so much for 'Forgetfulness' - I just clicked the link. I loove it - another wonderful poet to add to my list. And, by the way, this is my very first ever comment to anything, ever. Clodagh

Congratulations Clodagh!
It might please you to know that Billy does visit London from time to time - first time I saw him read was at the dear old Troubadour (http://www.troubadour.co.uk/)

Rhona it was a wonderful poem/video indeed. I like Billy Collins a lot. Great fun was had in Saskatoonon the weekend as well. Jack Pine/Brick launch at Betsy and John's. Lovely chapbooks by Holly Luhning and Don Domanski, and a posthumous book of poetry by Anne Szumigalski. Do you have any readings upcoming???

Why Mari-Lou it's funny you should ask about readings: after a dry summer I'm suddenly here there and everywhere, and I've listed the venues on the blog's sidebar. Next stop is Word on the Street in Vancouver, this very weekend. (If I can manage it, I will stop by your old neighbourhood and visit the amazing Donna to have my toenails painted en route.)

Great, I just checked them all out. Alas, houses might be cheaper in Saskatoon, but pedicures are not. $35 and up. I am busy making Hairia, North African Vegetable soup that is served during Ramadan. Lovely mix of tumeric, coriander and cinnamon in the spice base. Tomatoes from my garden. It froze last night, and will again tonight, so guess who will be canning..
